Small Business Wellness

Good health begins at home

but is also influenced by behavior in the workplace where Americans typically spend 1/3 or more of their waking hours.

Research shows that wellness programs aimed at preventing and managing chronic illness are integral to reducing health care costs and absenteeism for all employees, even those with chronic conditions. Moreover, employers who add wellness programs save money, too.

Employers who invest in worksite wellness programs receive $6 in return for every $1 spent.

Health People offers worksite wellness programs targeted at preventing and managing chronic illnesses including asthma, diabetes and tobacco-related illnesses that have huge health — and cost — impacts on adults, children, families and businesses in the South Bronx. With proper education, many of these diseases can be prevented or effectively self-managed.

Health People can offer any of the following programs singly or in combination, and we would be happy to speak with you about designing a customized program to meet your needs.

Did you know that…

1 out of 3

residents in the South Bronx

are prediabetic and

1 out of 5

already have diabetes?

Intensive Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)

Based on the national program developed and approved by the CDC, this 22–session group coaching workshop for prediabetics has been shown to slash participants’ diabetes risk by 60% — by teaching participants how to eat better and exercise more. It’s the most effective diabetes prevention program to date, and Health People is the only community-based organization in the South Bronx approved by the CDC to offer it.

It’s an epidemic

with huge health — and cost — impacts.

Employers spend on average

$4,413 more

for employees with diabetes.

30%+ of those

costs are attributable to

medically-related work

absences and disability.

Intensive Diabetes Self-Care

Modeled after Stanford University Medical Center’s program course, this 6-session workshop series (one 2 1/2 hour session per week) focuses on effective diabetes self-care, providing techniques and tips for those who already have the disease.

The South Bronx is the epicenter

of chronic disease in NYS.

Currently, it’s ranked the:

#1 least

healthy county

in New York State.

Chronic Illness Self-Care

Also based on a Stanford Medical course model, this 6-week group workshop program (one 2 1/2 hour session per week) provides proven practices for self-management of chronic illnesses including chronic heart disease (#1 cause of death in the South Bronx), cancer (#2), diabetes, asthma, etc.

Employers spend on average

$4,400+

in annual total medical costs and

$924

in work loss, not counting work absences to care for children with asthma.

In some areas of the South Bronx, death rates

from asthma are

3x the national average.

Intensive Family Asthma Self-Care

Chronic asthma is the #1 cause of lost days from school and work; untreated, it can have major health impacts. Health People’s Intensive Family Asthma Self-Care Program, a 5-session intensive workshop series featuring 2-hour educational home visits once per week, has been shown to reduce absenteeism by 60% and emergency room visits by 50%.

More than

1 in 5 people

in the South Bronx smoke.

Employees who smoke cost businesses nearly

$6,000 more per year

not counting the costs

of lost productivity.

Tobacco Cessation

Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable illness in the U.S. This 8-session workshop series (8 one-hour sessions) can help employees who smoke break the habit for good.
